Resumen


El estudio del desarrollo motor infantil ha atravesado momentos de gloria y de abandono. Estudiar los movimientos infantiles ha sido uno de los asuntos más antiguos de la psicología del desarrollo. Hubo una época en la que el esfuerzo por describir este comportamiento reclamó la atención de numerosos investigadores. Todo empezó con narraciones biográficas de los propios hijos o sobrinos (Darwin, 1877; Shinn, 1900) a lo que se añadió el titánico esfuerzo de Arnold Gesell por describir el desarrollo motor y ponerlo al servicio de los profesionales a través de todo un conjunto de publicaciones (Gesell, 1928; Gesell y Thompson, 1934). Su morfología evolutiva se fundamentó en una serie de principios todavía hoy considerados interesantes por diferentes estudiosos (Newell y Van Emmerik, 1990).
